About Prajasattak


India gained its independence on 15th August 1947 Subsequently the process of preparing a constitution was started. The Constitution was passed on 26th November 1949 in the Constituent Assembly. It was adopted on 26th January 1950 with a democratic government system and the country became a Prajasattak (Republic) in true sense. 26th January was selected as Republic day because the Declaration of Indian Independence was passed on this specific day of year 1930.


The Constitution declares India to be a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, assuring its citizens of justice, equality, and liberty, and endeavors’ to promote fraternity among them. India celebrates the adoption of the constitution on 26th January each year as Republic Day.

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, HAVING SOLEMNLY RESOLVED TO constitute INDIA INTO A "SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC" AND to secure all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY, of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY, of status and opportunity; and to promote among them all;
FRATERNITY, assuring the dignity of individual the unity and integrity of nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION."
